Four Little Foxes

19/1/26     Formal Notes

A. Annotate the following

"the four little foxes saw their mother go — walk softly . . . . . . . . . ."

a. What have the "little foxes seen?"

Ans: The little foxes have seen their mother get caught in a trap.

b. Where has their mother gone?

Ans: In saying that the cubs 'watched their mother go' the speaker means that the cubs watched their mother get caught in a trap and die a slow and painful death.

B. Answer the following

Q1. What does the speaker mean when he asks March to 'walk softly'?

Ans In asking March to 'walk softly' and 'step softly', the speaker is appealing to March to be gentle and show mercy on the fox cubs by holding back its cold, frosty winds and dangerous hurricanes. The speaker asks March to do these things because the fox cubs are lying alone in the freezing cold without any food or shelter. If the weather continues to be stormy and frosty, the cubs will probably die.

Q2 why does he plead with nature?

Ans Humans are supposed to have feelings of nurturing but, since one of them has brought this on, the speaker pleads with nature to protect the babies.

Q3 What is the irony in the poem?

Ans Usually, spring is heralded with joy as the season of rebirth but here it is a sad season of death for the mother fox and, probably for the babies too.

C Answer in detail

Q1 What is the speaker's fervent request to nature?

Ans The speaker chanced upon four delicate, hungry and orphaned foxes in the wood while he was taking a stroll. He immediately became very protective of them. He makes an earnest request to nature to take all the precaution to take care of these helpless little foxes. He first requests the wind to blow softly, as a strong wind would blow away these delicate animals. He then requests spring to be even more gentle and not to alarm them as he covered the little ones using boughs as shelters for them. Nature should show more sympathy by not bringing in a severe hurricane or rain — that would almost kill the orphaned foxes as they were already whimpering with pain.

Extrapolation: Draw a poster of save animals
