Formal Notes: Magnetism- UNIT - 2 - Properties and uses of Magnets. Q1 (a) You are provided with a 15 cm long steel strip. By using a permanent magnet, explain how you will magnetise the steel strip. Ans: Take the thin steel strip about 15 cm long. Mark one side as 'A' and the other one as 'B'. Place the strip AB along one edge of the table. Rub the magnet along the strip from till point B. Lift the magnet and place it again on point A rubbing it along till point B. Repeat this 40 times. And the steel strip will get converted into a magnet. (b) How will you verify the magnetic poles formed on the steel strip? Ans: Bring the end A of the strip to the north pole of a freely pivoted magnetic needle. The north pole of a freely suspended magnetic needle is repelled, which proves that end A of the steel strip changed into North pole of a magnet and hence end B becomes South pole. Q.2 (a) What is principle of pinhole camera? (b) Briefly describe the construction and working of a pinhole camera. Draw a diagram in support of your answer. Ans. (a) Principle of Pinhole Camera: It is based on the principle that light travels in straight lines i.e. Rectilinear Propagation of Light. Ans. (b) Construction of Pinhole Camera: It consists of a rectangular cardboard box, such that one is made out of ground glass screen. The side opposite to the ground glass screen has a hole in the middle, whose size is equal to the pinhead of a common pin. The box is blackened from inside so as to absorb any light which falls on its walls directly or indirectly. Working of Pinhole Camera: Consider a candle AB in front of the pinhole camera. Pinhole Camera 1) Aim: To prove that light travels in a straight line. Materials required: Three stiff cardboards, three wooden blocks, a sharp pin, geometry box, adhesive tape, candle, and matchbox. Procedure: Place the cardboard one upon another. On the topmost cardboard, draw diagonals as shown in fig. 5.11(a). Make a hole with the help of a sharp pin at the point of intersection of diagonals through all the cardboards. Observation: If you [align the holes], you can see the light will perfectly pass through the cardboards. But when you move one of the cardboards, the light does not pass through. Conclusion: Light can only travel in straight lines.
